Make a healthy soothing Turmeric Latte

Turmeric has so many health benefits. It is known to ease inflammation in the body, increase circulation, and protects your heart.  In your busy life take a break and treat yourself to a healthy, soothing Turmeric Latte!

Healthy and calming Turmeric Latte drink

A Turmeric Latte is an excellent drink for winter days especially. The warmth of the milk, together with the mix of spices, makes it soothing and spicy all at the same time.

You can really use any type of milk for this Latte. In this recipe I am using Almond Milk, as I feel it adds just the right flavor to the Latte.  I am probably a little biased however I should add, because the first ever Turmeric Latte I ever tried was made with Almond Milk.

Using a nut milk and a non-dairy milk I feel also makes it so much healthier, and kinder to your gut and your digestion. You could also use Coconut Milk, which would give this Latte a lovely flavor.

Turmeric contains Curcumin, which is its active compound. It is this compound that reduces inflammation and lowers blood sugar levels in the body.  Turmeric and Curcumin are also said to be full of antioxidents, and they can relieve depression, and also help to prevent premature aging.

The reason that black pepper is added to this drink is because it helps with the absorption of the Curcumin (and gives it a little punch!).

This Latte can also help you sleep, as it leaves you with a feeling of calm after drinking it.  If you like to have a hot drink before bedtime, you need something without caffeine, as that will just keep you awake and feeling wired. This Latte is the perfect calming night time drink.

Any time of the day or night, Instead of reaching for a coffee, reach for a calming health-giving Turmeric Latte instead.

When making a Turmeric Latte remember that less is more. Don’t use more than the recommended amount of each spice, if anything use less. It only takes slightly more than the recommended amount to slide the taste over the edge to not be as calming and more bitter-tasting.  Be especially careful with the Turmeric, Ginger, and black pepper.

You may find your own adjustments to the amounts after making this a few times, and experimenting with the taste that suits you.

Ingredients:
350ml Almond Milk
1/4 teaspoon ground Turmeric
1/4 teaspoon ground Ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground Cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon Vanilla extract
2 teaspoons Maple Syrup
Small grind of black pepper

Directions:
Place all the ingredients into a small saucepan, and heat over a medium heat until the mixture is at a rolling, gentle boil.

As the mixture is heating up, whisk it continually with a hand-held wire whisk, or you can use a spoon if you do not have a whisk (remember to stir constantly).  If you have a milk frother you could add all the ingredients to that and froth together.

Once heated, pour into cups of your choice and sprinkle a little Cinnamon on top, to taste.

Variations:
As I mentioned previously, you can use any type of milk of your choice for this Latte.  Instead of the maple syrup you could also use honey to sweeten it.  Instead of the ground ginger, you could use a small piece of grated fresh ginger.

If you find this drink too strong and bitter tasting at first, decrease the amount of spices, starting with the Turmeric, until you get to the point where you feel it is most suited to your own tastes.
