What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are plant extracts that are made by steaming or pressing certain parts of a plant.

The most common parts of a plant used for essential oils are the leaves, bark, flowers and the fruit.

It can take many pounds of a plant’s properties to create an essential oil. That is why certain essential oils can be quite pricey, because so much has to be used.

Do Essential Oils Really Work?

Essential oils have been proven to work really well for many different conditions, just as long as they are used safely.

There is no regulatory body for essential oils, which means tht you do not know exactly what you are purchasing.

You should purchase essential oils from well known retailers whenever you can.  This still will not ensure that all ingredients inside the oils are accounted for, but they are more likely to be.

Essential oils are best used personally only.  Using a diffuser for instance inside a room with many people in it is not recommended, as each person can react differently to that particular essential oil.

Having an essential oil roll on means only you are getting the benefits of that particular essential oil, which makes it far safer.

You should never ingest essential oils – they are for external use on the body only. Never put them in food or drink.

The safest way to use essential oils is to use aromatherapy necklaces, such as necklaces and keychains, as well as body oil – that is a mixture of essential oils with a carrier oil, aroma sticks, and personal roll-ons.

Here is a simple tutorial to get you started making and using aromatherapy roll-ons:

Materials Needed for Aromatherapy Roll-Ons:

3 brown glass bottles with black caps.

Steps to Making Aromatherapy Roll-ons:

Choose Your Essential Oils: Select essential oils based on the therapeutic effects you’re seeking. For example, lavender is calming, peppermint is invigorating, and citrus oils are up-lifting.

Prepare Your Roller Bottles: Clean and sterilize your rollerball bottles. You can do this by washing them with warm, soapy water and rinsing thoroughly, or placing them in the dishwasher.

Create Your Aromatherapy Blends: Decide on the purpose of each blend (relaxation, focus, energy, etc.) and combine your chosen essential oils. Here are a few blend ideas:

    • Relaxation: Lavender, Bergamot, and Frankincense
    • Energy Boost: Peppermint, Orange, and Lemon
    • Focus: Rosemary, Lemon, and Eucalyptus
    • Calm Mind: Lavender, Chamomile, and Ylang Ylang

Dilute with Carrier Oil: Essential oils are potent and should be diluted before applying to the skin. A common dilution ratio is 3-5% essential oil to carrier oil. For a 10ml roller bottle, this typically means 6-10 drops of essential oil and the rest filled with carrier oil.

Fill the Bottles: If you’re using a funnel, place it in the bottle’s opening. Add your essential oil blend first, and then fill the rest of the bottle with your chosen carrier oil. Leave a small amount of space at the top to allow for the rollerball insert.

Insert the Rollerball and Cap: Place the rollerball insert into the bottle and press down firmly. Make sure it’s secure. Screw on the cap tightly.

Label Your Roll-Ons: Label each bottle with the name of the blend and the date it was created. This will help you identify and track your blends.

Shake and Test: Gently shake the bottle to ensure the essential oils are well mixed. Perform a patch test on a small area of skin to check for any sensitivity before applying the roll-on more widely to your body.

Application: Apply the roll-on to pulse points, such as wrists, temples, and behind the ears. Roll it on and gently massage the oil into the area.

Enjoy Your Aromatherapy: Use your aromatherapy roll-ons whenever you need a mood boost, relaxation, or support for various emotional states.

Remember that essential oils can have individual sensitivities, so it’s important to use them mindfully and do a patch test before applying to larger areas of skin. If you’re pregnant, nursing, or have any medical conditions, consult a healthcare professional before using essential oils.
