If you love to craft a designated room or space in your home is essential – to work in and also store all those supplies! Read on for how to plan a craft room or space in your home!
If you love to craft I am guessing that you have your craft stuff all over the place! You are probably driving your family crazy with all that stuff that you have!
Having all your craft supplies together in one place makes crafting so much easier. You won’t have to hunt things down, or wonder where you put them.
If you are considering turning a room in your home into a craft room, or you need to create a space in your home for your crafting, this article will help you plan!
Identify an Area in your Home
Start out by identifying an area in your home that you can use for crafting and storage.
You may be lucky enough to have a room in your home that you can turn into a craft room. This is the ideal solution – because you can work as well as store all the things you need to do your crafting.
I stored my craft supplies in my basement laundry room for many years! Now I am using a spare room in my home, which was emptied once my son left for college!
If you don’t have a room available, then figure out a space and area in your home that you could use for crafting.
You could double up on a room’s use – for instance craft in your laundry room, or basement.
If a room really isn’t available, try to identify a space in your home that you could use for crafting and storage.
That really could be anywhere in your home – in your kitchen, living room or bedroom.
You can even use a closet as a craft place! This makes it kind of a mini room, and you should be able to house a small desk and other items in most closets.
Create a Mood Board
For the ideal way to plan your craft room or space, using a mood board is a great way to have a glimpse into what it will actually look like when finished.
You can make sure that articles go together, especially if you are sticking to a certain color scheme.
You can create a physical mood board and print off or cut out photos of what you want and place on there.
Or you can use a digital mood board, such as a template in Canva or other design software, and upload all the photos of things you want into that template.
What do you Need in your Craft Room or Space?
What you will need in your craft room or space will depend upon the type of crafting that you do essentially.
If you sew you will need space for a sewing machine, storing fabric and sewing supplies. You may even need a table where you can cut out your patterns.
If you are a knitter the biggest thing you will need to store is your yarn.
Make a list of the things that you need in your craft room or space, for what you do and intend to use it for.
Essential Items for your Craft Room
These items are general items that work for pretty much anything that you will be doing, or storing, in your craft room.
Craft Table
An overall craft table is a great piece of furniture to have in a craft room. Whatever craft you are doing – be it cutting, sewing, drawing or whatever it is can always benefit from a craft table.
Think about the type of table that you need. If you are likely to be doing messy projects you will need something with a surface that will clean easily.
You may need a mobile craft table, such as one on wheels, as you will need to move it around.
You may need storage incorporated into that table too, so the things that you need regularly are at hand.
Desk
A desk isn’t just for using a computer or writing on, it can also work well in a craft room.
You may use a computer anyway in your craft room, or if you are an artist you can also use it to paint and draw.
A desk can also double as a craft work table, and also as a sewing table.
Storage
You will probably need quite a lot of storage in your craft room. Consider what you will be storing and using in there.
If you are using a sewing machine you will need somewhere to place it and store those supplies.
If you are an artist you will need places to keep all your art materials, and keep them free from dust too.
Consider storage cabinets and storage drawer cabinets.
Pegboard
A pegboard is a great piece for a craft room. You can store things that are easily accessible, such as scissors etc on a pegboard. Plus you can see what you have!
Chair
A chair is essential in a craft room. The type of chair you will need may depend on what you are doing.
A chair on wheels is a great idea for a craft room because you may need to use it in different places throughout the room.
For instance, you may need to use it for sewing at your sewing table, and also use it at your general desk.
A chair on wheels can also be easily scooted around the room to reach your storage spaces and cabinets quickly and easily.
Good Lighting
Good lighting is essential for crafting, especially if you are working on smaller projects.
Smaller lamps will give off better light that large overhead lighting, unless you really need that type of lighting for the projects you are doing.
Storage Carts
Storage carts are great to use in a craft room. They can store a lot of your things that you need to use regularly and things you need close at hand.
My favorite storage cart is the Raskog cart from IKEA. This versatile little cart on wheels can be used just about anywhere in your home – but it works so perfectly in a craft room!
