Organizing your receipts is a crucial organizing task. Having organized receipts means you will always be able to find and locate them. Never lose a receipt again with this guide to receipt organization!

 

Organizing your receipts isn’t the most enjoyable of tasks, I will be completely honest! But it is one of those tasks that you just have to do (if you want to get and stay organized!).

Where are you currently storing your receipts?  Are they organized somewhere, and readily to hand? I am guessing they are not, and that is why you are reading this post!

Organizing your receipts doesn’t have to be daunting and hard. Just set aside a weekend afternoon, or one evening, to go through your receipts and get them organized.  Just a few hours should be enough to get you completely organized.

Never lose a receipt again, by getting all those receipts organized and to hand.

Why do you Need to Organize Your Receipts?

How many times have you needed to take something back to a store, and you have no idea where the receipt is for that product?

A lot of stores won’t accept returns without a receipt (they might refund you, but usually it is with store credit if you don’t have an actual receipt).  

It is important to keep your receipts, and know where they are located, so that you can get money back, and return items you no longer want, need, or that don’t fit or work.

You need a system for your receipts, so you know where they are, and you can find and access them easily and fast. You don’t have hours to waste trying to find a certain receipt!

Types of Organizing for Receipts

Organizing your receipts can be done in many different places and many different ways. The key is to find the way that works best for you and your own life.

You can organize, and keep, receipts in binders, files, boxes, desks, envelopes, jars and so many places.

You can also organize receipts in so many ways.  You can organize by date (by month, or by year), by vendor, and by type, among many different ways.

How to Organize Specific Receipts

Specific receipts, such as clothing receipts, receipts for household products, medical and dental receipts, and tax related receipts, can really benefit from special organizing considerations and methods:

Organizing your Clothing Receipts

I actually feel that the best way to organize your clothing receipts is to keep them near your clothing.  Why? Because when you come to wear that dress or shoes you bought, and they don’t fit or you wonder why on earth you actually bought them, you will have the receipts to hand to return those items.

But what is the best way to keep those receipts near your clothing?  The obvious choice is in your closet or wardrobe.  

A box placed on a shelf in your closet especially for your receipts is an obvious choice.  Or even some kind of notice board placed on the wall of your closet, where you can pin your receipts.

Another great idea for your clothing receipts, is to attach them to the piece of clothing itself. You could either pin them to the clothing directly, or even attach them to the hanger the clothing is hanging on.  That way, when you go to wear that outfit, if it doesn’t fit, or you don’t like it after all, you don’t have to dig around for the receipt.

Organizing your Household Product Receipts

For household and home products that you buy, such as things for your kitchen, a good way to keep those receipts to hand is to tape them to the outside of the boxes the items came in.

For instance, if you buy a new mixer for your kitchen. You are likely to keep the box for a little while, especially to make sure that it works as it should.  Therefore if you attach the receipt to the outside of the box, if you need to return the item, the receipt will be right here and easily located.

Organizing Medical & Dental Receipts

Medical and dental receipts can be pretty major receipts to keep.  

You may need to keep medical receipts for co-payments that you make, for prescriptions and more.  You certainly want to hold on to receipts for medical and dental treatment to make sure you are not billed incorrectly.

The best way to organize medical and dental receipts is to keep them in a ring binder.  You could even create tabs inside the binder to separate them out. Such as a tab per provider/doctor’s office, or a tab for the type of treatment – dentist, podiatrist, primary care etc.  Another way to keep medical and dental receipts is to keep them organized per month and per year.

Organizing Receipts for Major House Projects

If you are renovating, re-decorating, or doing a large project for and in your home, you want to keep all those receipts to hand.

A binder is another great way to keep those receipts to hand. Use a binder and create tabs relating to the specific project. You can either keep a binder per project – such as Kitchen, Bathroom etc. Or you can keep binders by month and year for everything done throughout your home.

Keep receipts for all aspects of your home projects. Keep receipts for companies and workmen, receipts for products such as paint, and receipts for major appliances that you purchased.

 

Organizing your Receipts for Taxes

If you are self employed, or run a side hustle, you will know that you need to save all receipts for business related expenses, in case you are ever audited.

If you give regular donations to charities and organizations you should also keep those receipts.  If you donate clothing and other products, keep records of what you donate, and the date, so that you can claim these on your taxes.

To keep your receipts for tax purposes, it may be useful to keep them all in a binder, marked with the tax year.  As you donate, or make a business purchase, place those receipts inside the binder.

 

Ideas for Where to Keep Your Receipts

There are so many places, and so many ideas for where you can actually keep your receipts. Here are some suggestions:

Glass Jar
A large glass jar, placed on a shelf, or inside a closet or cupboard, can be a great place to keep your receipts.  The bigger the glass jar, the more receipts you can keep!

Coupon Organizer
Coupon organizers, such as these ones, can be great for organizing receipts too.  One of the best ways to organize your receipts like this is it organize them per month, and/or per year.

Envelopes
Envelopes can work well for storing receipts. But try to use several different envelopes that are split by category. For instance, have one envelope for Groceries, one envelope for Clothing, and envelopes for other items.  You could also make envelopes for different stores if you regularly shop at certain stores (for instance for Target, CVS, Safeway, Banana Republic etc).

Binders
As mentioned above for several different types of receipts, binders are a great way to organize receipts.  You can organize receipts chronologically, by type, or in many different ways.

Recipe Box
A recipe box is another great way to keep receipts. Use binders inside the box to separate by month/year, or by category. You can either tape or clip receipts to recipe cards to keep them organized, or you can just place the receipt directly into the box behind the appropriate divider.

Accordian File
An Accordian File is a great way to organize receipts. Keep them organized inside pockets that are tabbed, whatever way you want to label the tabs Accordian files make it easy to keep all the receipts together, and find them again easily.

Zippered Pouches
Zippered pouches, especially these color-coded ones, are great for keeping things organized, such as receipts.
