How to make your kitchen look & feel like new – without spending much!

Updating your kitchen is a great home renovation project.  Do you walk into your kitchen and wish it could be different?  Do you hate your cabinets? Hate the color scheme? Do you hate everything about your kitchen?

Of course we all love those beautiful kitchens that we see in magazines and on Pinterest, but affording them is not always possible, and just think about all the upheaval of a new kitchen!

But there are dollar-friendly ways to completely update and upgrade your kitchen, so that it feels like a completely new room afterwards: a room and place in your home that you can finally enjoy to spend time in!  Renovating your kitchen is a great home renovation project that can totally transform your home.

Paint your cabinets

When we moved into our first house we had two babies, not much money or time, and horrible old dark wooden kitchen cabinets that looked like they were from another age entirely. We opted to paint the cabinets white, and it made such a difference! Just painting your cabinets can make them look like new and your kitchen will feel like a completely different room!

A word of warning however – this is quite a big job!  You will love the end result, but it does take some work and time to paint your cabinets, especially to do the job properly.  I have rounded up some of the best and most helpful posts that I have found here on how to paint your kitchen cabinets.

The paint you choose to use can make a huge difference to the look, and ease of this project. Many people favor chalk paint, as it is easier to work with, usually requires no primer, and you don’t have to do as much sanding and prep to the cabinet wood prior to painting.  Chalk paint can also give a really smooth silky finish.  But I would advise you to do a little research into finishes, colors and more, to find out what type of paint would be best for you to use.

I found a few great posts on Pinterest that will give you further and more detailed information on painting your kitchen cabinets:

Add Task Lighting

Just adding lighting in specific parts of your kitchen will not only make doing certain tasks easier for you, it will also make your room and decor look so much better.  Placing lights under upper cabinets is incredibly effective. You can also place lights inside your cabinets, and even on shelving. Pendant lights can illuminate and add a lovely look to breakfast bars and other areas of your kitchen.

Replace Cabinet Handles & Knobs

Just replacing the knobs and handles on your cabinets and drawers can make a huge difference in the look of your kitchen.  You can even get the look of a completely new room entirely by painting cabinets and replacing handles and knobs.  Handles can change the look of a room – for instance a Retro look with certain handles and pulls, and you can also change your kitchen color scheme – perhaps all black handles and pulls on white painted cabinets.  Knobs and handles for your kitchen cabinets come in a variety of colors and finishes, including stainless steel, wood, glass and plastic.

Remove Cabinet doors altogether

More open shelving is definitely popular right now in kitchens. If you want to open up your room more, remove either all the cabinet doors, or remove a few.   It will certainly make it easier for you to find items if they are right there on display, and you may also have some lovely pieces that would look good displayed.

Update your Kitchen Back splash

Your kitchen tiles may be dated, a color you just don’t like, or you don’t want tile anymore at all.  Removing or replacing your back splash tiling can make a huge difference to your kitchen.

There are several ways that you can do this. You could paint over or stencil over existing tile. For instance if you have plain white tile you could add stickers or stencils to put more color and pattern into the tile. You can seal the tile with a coat of polyurethane afterwards to seal in and protect the tile.  You could paint over a tile that you don’t like the color of – for instance color a dated colored tiled wall white.

You can also put adhesive tile over existing tile, or use adhesive tile to create a tiled wall, without going to the trouble and expense of actually tiling the wall.  These white subway tile adhesive sheets will give you a great subway tiled wall look, without all that expense and time.

Adhesive tiled sheets come in all kinds of sized tiles and colors.  This is another great backsplash adhesive tile.

Instead of groaning every time you walk into your kitchen, for a little effort and low expense you can totally change the look of the room entirely, and make it feel like a whole new and different kitchen!
