When was the last time you got a really good night’s sleep?  If you do get a good night’s sleep on a regular basis that is of course fantastic, and you don’t need this article at all!

But most of us don’t feel that we ever get a truly good night’s restful sleep. We may wake up several times. We may be too hot, too cold. Our mattress isn’t comfortable. There are so many reasons why we may not sleep well.

But by focusing on your bedroom and where you sleep, you can at least pave the way for a more restful and calmer night. 

Sleep is so important for our physical and mental health.  Yet so many people report bad sleep. Much of it is due to our faster more crazy paced life these days.  Our minds are frequently on overload by the time our heads hit the pillow.

Get A Great Mattress

First and foremost, the best mattress you can afford is recommended.  Go to a specialty mattress store so that you can test out each mattress and find the one that feels best for you.

It’s a good idea to try to find a store that allows for a trial period to make sure you love it and that you’ll sleep well night after night. Many stores do have a good return policy.

Keep your room Cool

Temperature matters when it comes to getting a good night’s rest. You want to sleep in a room that is cool in order to promote sleep. Cooler temperatures alert your body that it’s time to sleep. 

You don’t want to be too cold, so that you are shivering under the blankets. But it is scientifically proven that a colder room helps you sleep better.

Consider a ceiling fan above your bed, if you want to have cooler air blowing on you through the night. Or purchase a bedside fan.

Many people also like having a window cracked open (not in the summer!).


Make your room Dark

Waking up to see light filtering in through the curtains can truly disturb your rest and make it harder to fall back asleep.

That’s why it’s smart to add light-blocking drapes to your bedroom. Keeping things nice and dark will add to your nighttime routine. In addition, avoid adding night lights if at all possible in your bedroom.


Add Soothing Colors

Calming, cool colors are best for the bedroom. A nice pastel will promote rest and relaxation far better than a brighter hue.

Seeing piles of laundry to be put away or the paperwork that’s waiting for you in the morning will not put you in the right frame of mind for rest.

Reconsider Your Alarm Clock

Not only do you want to sleep well through the night, how you wake up can also have an effect on how you feel.

A harsh, high-pitched, buzzing alarm clock will jar you awake. This can cause you to feel agitated, rather than rested and rejuvenated.

Get Rid of the Technology

This one is hard for most of us. We all check our email and phones before bed. Some of us read books on our phones and tablets before bed.

But that blue light that those devices emits greatly affects our sleep. It also damages our eyesight.

Try to stop using all technology at least an hour before you go to bed to sleep.  Don’t sleep with your phone next to your bed, which just emits blue light all night. 

Consider reading paper books again (yes really!).
