Clutter in your life can be overwhelming and stop you from being as productive as you could be. That goes for your digital clutter too. Learn how to declutter your digital life – your computer, data and files – to be more productive!
Physical clutter is obvious and surrounds us – piles of paper, untidy rooms, cluttered work surfaces and more.
But digital clutter is there too – it is just less obvious than the physical kind.
Digital clutter can easily make you overwhelmed, and it can disrupt and hinder your productivity.
Digital clutter can make any job you need to do take twice a long, it can prevent you from completing tasks, and it can cause you a lot of stress.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. Organizing and sorting your digital life can create less digital clutter and make your life so much easier.
What is Digital Clutter?
Digital clutter is disorganization of your electronics, digital devices, and data. This disorganization – or mess – can appear as an overloaded email inbox, full phone storage, or many many files on your computer desktop.
Why is Digital Clutter a Problem?
If you routinely spend a lot of time searching for a certain file or data on your computer, laptop or phone, because it isn’t organized, that is a problem.
Not having your data and digital life organized can mean that any job takes far longer than it needs to.
If you have to search for a certain photograph that you know you have somewhere, but can’t quite locate, you are wasting precious time, especially if your time is limited.
But not only does digital clutter affect your productivity and waste your time, it also affects many other things too.
Too much clutter on your electronic devices will greatly slow down those devices. Not having your data organized and your electronics a mess also heightens the chance of cybersecurity risks.
How to Declutter Your Digital Life
Decluttering your digital life involves deleting files that you don’t need, and only keeping what you do need.
With the files that you do need and want, they need to be organized and easy to access and find.
You need to set up folders that are easy to find and locate, and contain the files that belong in them.
It is also important to set naming guidelines for your files and data. Name your files so that they are easy to find.
If you have a photo of yourself at Jessica’s wedding for instance, make sure it is labelled something like “me at Jessica’s wedding 2020” so you can locate it easily.
Email is one of the biggest causes of stress for most of us. Most of our email inboxes are overflowing with unread email, or emails we haven’t yet dealt with.
Organizing your email inbox, and setting guidelines and rules for your email can make your life so much easier.
Unsubscribe from emails you really don’t need or want to receive. Create special folders to filter email into, so that all emails for instance regarding a hobby you have go into that folder automatically.
Social media can be so much fun to follow, but it can also zap so much of your time. Stop following social media that you really don’t care for.
Do you really need to follow FaceBook, Twitter, Instagram, and Tik Tok? Can you eliminate one or more so you have less to check?
Set Aside Time to Organize Your Digital Life
It takes time to completely organize your files and data. So it is best to do it gradually and little by little.
Set goals and guidelines for working on organizing your data and files. Set aside a little time each day to work on a certain part of that organizing. That way it won’t get too overwhelming, and you can easily fit it into your day.
