Chai Tea Concentrate to Make Yourself (Including Free Gift Tags!)

This Chai Tea Concentrate is delicious and so easy to make too!  Create your own to use whenever you want a cozy drink, or to gift to somebody for the holidays!

Recently I have wanted Chai Tea Latte pretty much all the time! This seems to be how things go with me – I taste something and then I want it constantly.

I used to drink Chai Latte a lot several years ago. But for some reason I forgot about it.  Or maybe it was because the chai concentrate that I really loved to use to make them was hard to find, and expensive too.

So when I re-started my Chai habit recently, I wanted to try to make my own concentrate to use – so it was always handy, and also less expensive than those shop bought ones.

More and more I also want to make my own gifts to give during the holidays. So this Chai Concentrate is perfect as a gift also!

The recipe I am using for this particular Chai Concentrate is very easy to use and follow. The great thing also about making something like Chai Concentrate is that you can play around with it a little bit too.

You can make your concentrate spicier or less spicy. You can use more of one spice, and less of another. You can really try different things with this recipe.

I have made this recipe many times, and each time I probably make it a little differently.  By differently I just maybe throw in some extra Star Anises, or perhaps use more cinnamon sticks. You really can play around with it.

You can also use any containers for this. If you want to give it as a gift pick more elaborate glass bottles and containers.

But you can re-use glass bottles from just about anything to store the concentrate. Just make sure you wash the bottles and containers thoroughly first.

You can wash and rinse out the bottles, then place them in the dishwasher and wash them on a heated dry wash to sanitize them also.

Notes on Making Chai Concentrate

This recipe makes about 6 cups of concentrate. Usually when I make this recipe I double it, so I have a lot of Chai Concentrate to keep to use.  It is very easy to just double the ingredients.

For the sweetener in this concentrate you can use either honey or maple syrup, or a mixture of both.

I usually use maple syrup for this recipe.  But I have also made it with half honey and half maple syrup.  Once again you can play around with what you like and try different ways.

You can also use granulated sugar as a sweetener for this. It is not as healthy as maple syrup and honey, so it is not something that I tend to use in this recipe.

But if you need to make it and you don’t have maple syrup or honey to hand, granulated sugar can be used.

With regard to the tea bags, I should also note that I use British tea bags, which are much stronger than the tea bags available in the US.  So depending on what tea bags you use you may want to use more or less of them.

Some of the spices in this recipe are not available in regular grocery stores.  I had trouble finding the Star Anise and also the Cardamon Pods. Therefore I have included links for these to make sourcing and finding these ingredients much easier for you.

Ingredients for Chai Concentrate

6 cups (15ml) of cold water
3/4 cup maple syrup (or honey, or a mixture of both)
Knob of fresh ginger, peeled and sliced
25 whole cloves
5 cinnamon sticks
6 whole star anise
15 cardamon pods, squashed lightly
10 black peppercorns
Few pieces/coils of fresh orange peel
About 4 or 5 black tea bags

How to Make Chai Concentrate

Combine water and maple syrup (or honey or whatever combination you are using) in a large pan.

Allow the mixture to come to a boil, and stir it until the maple syrup/honey is completely dissolved in the water.

Add all ingredients to the pan (except for the tea bags).  Put a lid on the pan and let the mixture simmer on a low heat for about 15-20 minutes.

Remove the saucepan from the heat and add the teabags to the mixture.

Let the mixture cool and steep for about 15-20 minutes.  If you want less strong tea in the mixture, let it steep for less time.

Once the time is up remove the teabags from the mixture.

Let the mixture cool. Once cooled, use a sieve or a fine muslin cloth to pour the mixture into bottles or containers.

This mixture should store well in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.  It is best stored sealed in a bottle or container.

Giving Chai Concentrate as a Gift

Chai concentrate is a great gift to give for the holidays. It has the spicy coziness that everyone loves during the holidays, and it is so tasty too.

Here are some gift tags that you can print off and attach to the bottles to gift the Chai Concentrate.

Attach the gift tags with ribbon, string, or any material that looks nice and elegant (punch a hole in the gift tag where the small black circle is).

Enjoy your Chai Tea Concentrate!
