I keep my clothes closet pretty well organized, but every now and again there is definately some tidying up and re-organizing that needs to be done. But there are just some things I can’t bring myself to toss, either for sentimental reasons, or because I just feel that I might need them again one day. So what should you toss, and what should you keep in your closet?
We accumulate so many hangers, including those blah wire dry-cleaning hangers. Hangers are definately something that you can go through and condense. Throw out those dry-cleaning wire hangers, and any broken or faulty hangers that you have. If you want to have all matching hangers in your closet, gradually re-purpose the hangers you don’t want somewhere else if you don’t want to toss them – perhaps in your coat closet or in another bedroom closet.
Old,Stained and Torn Clothing
This one may take some bravery! You may have a dress that you love, but it is torn beyond repair or stained and you just can’t get the stain out. Be honest, are you ever going to wear that piece of clothing again? It is just taking up space in your closet if you are never going to wear it again. If it is a sentimental piece of clothing this is a hard call. Perhaps you could fold it up and place it in a box for safe-keeping. Try to fix any torn clothing that can be fixed. If you can’t do it yourself take it to an alterations/repair store.
Boxes and Bags
Do you hold on to bags from certain stores, and any boxes that jewelry came in? If you have a jewelry organizing system you should be able to throw out those boxes. Keeping bags is just taking up space. I tend to keep some store bags in case I take the item back (it is always better to take it back in its original bag). But have you had something for months and have no intention of taking back, but the bag is still there? – toss it! What about shoe boxes? If you have shoe boxes laying around, just toss them. Unless it is a really expensive pair of shoes that you want to keep dust-proof there is no need to keep a shoe box.
Do you have those little plastic bags with spare buttons? Don’t toss buttons, because you never know when you will need them, but instead remove them from the plastic bags and place them all in a jar, or in your sewing basket.
We all have broken jewelry laying around, and also one earring that we lost the other one to ages ago.
I have so many single earrings. A lot of them I loved, but what am I going to do with one earring? If you can’t fix that piece of broken jewelry, toss it, or recycle it into a craft project. What about socks? Do you have lots of single socks floating around? I once kept a little box in my closet full of single socks, as I really thought I would find it’s mate eventually. I never did! It is one of those mysteries in life, where do socks go?!
Stuff that shouldn’t be in your clothes closet
Let’s be honest – we all stuff things into our clothes closet that shouldn’t be there! Last time I looked I had a foot spa and some Christmas presents I had bought for people stuffed into my clothes closet!
Obviously if you have a really small house and closet space is limited, you may well have to double up on your storage places. But try to keep your clothes closet free of items other than clothes and shoes, so it keeps more organized and clean.
